10 Questions to Ask When Planning a Green Burial

A Wildflower Funeral Concepts Blog Post Green burial is growing in popularity as more people seek ways to meaningfully honor life while also caring for the planet. But if you’re new to the idea, you may not know where to start — or what questions to ask. At Wildflower Funeral Concepts, we believe knowledge empowers families to make choices that feel aligned with their values.

Here are ten important questions to ask when planning a green burial:

1. What makes a burial “green”? A green burial avoids embalming, non-biodegradable caskets, and concrete vaults. Instead, the body is placed in a biodegradable shroud or casket, allowing it to return naturally to the earth. In some cases green burial is used to further ecological restoration and conservation goals.

2. Is green burial legal in Washington State? Yes! Green burial is fully legal in Washington. There are no laws, state or federal laws that prevent green burial. However, individual cemetery regulations often do prohibit it. The team at Wildflower Funeral Concepts has a wealth of experience providing these services in accordance with state law and cemetery regulations, and family wishes.

3. Where can I be buried naturally? Not all cemeteries allow green burial. Ask whether your chosen cemetery has a dedicated green section. Wildflower Funeral Concepts is glad to help locate a green burial option near you, wherever that might be.

4. Can I still have a viewing or ceremony?

Absolutely. There are several ways to hold peaceful, healing services with a viewing that don’t require embalming.  And, when situations call for it, there is a line of all natural embalming products that are approved for green burials.

5. Is embalming required? No — embalming is not required by law in Washington State. Green burial specifically avoids embalming to protect soil, groundwater, and worker health.

6. What kinds of containers are used?

Green burials can take place in a variety of biodegradable vessels that allow for lowering into the ground. It might be a solid wood casket without a finish, or a woven wicker casket. Cloth shrouds are commonly selected. Some shrouds have integrated handles and lowering straps for an easy hand lowering into the grave. It might even be a handmade lowering tray with ropes and the person wrapped in a handmade quilt.

7. Can veterans choose green burial?

Yes — veterans are entitled to burial benefits, and some National Cemeteries now include natural burial options. Ask your funeral director to walk you through your options.

8. How does green burial impact the environment?

Compared to traditional burial or cremation, green burial avoids toxic chemicals, reduces carbon emissions, and helps restore and conserve natural landscapes.

9. Can I pre-plan for a green burial?

Yes — and we recommend it. Pre-planning ensures your wishes are clear, and it relieves your loved ones of making difficult decisions later.

10. How can I know if my funeral home is committed to eco-friendly practices?

Ask! A truly eco-conscious funeral home will be transparent about their services, provide options like aquamation and terramation, and actively engage in sustainable practices.

At Wildflower, we see green burial as more than a choice — it’s a gift to the earth, to future generations, and to the loved ones who find peace in knowing your final act was one of care. 10 Questions to Ask When Planning a Green Burial
