“99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.”

Despite the common perception of lawyers, I personally know quite a few attorneys who are great at what they do and are good humans. People who approach their work as their way of serving individuals, families, and community. Some I feel blessed to call friends. One in particular I have enjoyed spending a fair amount of time getting to know lately. Phillip George, an Elder Law Attorney. His firm is Safe Harbor Legal Solutions in Bellingham.
I started hearing Phil’s name from folks who were putting together their pre-arranged plans with Wildflower. These were people who were working to get their ducks in a row: wills, trusts, estate planning, etc. They were speaking so highly of this attorney they had been working with, Phillip George. How kind, competent, and thorough he was. One of his clients I worked with was excited to tell me how Phil had left a career as an engineer at Boeing to go to law school and become an elder law attorney because he wanted to have a career where he could be of direct service, and that his law practice was relatively new. Then I started hearing Phil’s name from families I was working with after their person had died. Also singing his praises.
I started thinking “I need to meet this guy.” Up to this point there was only one attorney I would refer people to for probate and estate planning. Erin Mae Glass and her firm Chuckanut Law Group. Erin is fantastic, I have known her for over 25 years, and I feel really good about referring folks to her. But her practice is so busy – because she is so good. I take referrals very very seriously. I am staking my own good reputation on any referrals I make. So, I was curious to meet this Philip George who I kept hearing about. Maybe I could add him to this tiny list of one attorney I would refer people to.
It turns out, Phil was hearing similar things about me and about Wildflower. After seeing some of our funeral pre-planning documents one of his staff reached out to learn more. Over the course of our conversations this team member from Safe Harbor Legal Solutions mentioned that Phil had a radio show, The Aging Hour, on local radio station KGMI, and would I consider being a guest on it sometime. Would I be interested in going on the radio to talk about the Wildflower vision? Would I? So, Phil and I met for coffee to brainstorm what we might talk about on the radio. We instantly took a liking to each other. It was refreshing to be in the company of another professional who is passionate about what they do and about making it the best possible experience for the people they serve. In that first meeting I also learned that Phil serves on the Board of Directors for Whatcom Hospice Foundation. We had a number of shared interests.
Phil has become a champion for Wildflower. I am now a frequent guest on The Aging Hour. I have joined Phil for 9 episodes, with more in the works. He has given me such a powerful platform to share Wildflower’s mission and vision for meaningful, ecologically sound funeral care and some of the ways we help people engage healthy grieving. And, because Phil sees and supports the ways in which Wildflower serves our community he recommended me as a potential Board Member for Whatcom Hospice Foundation. After a months long vetting process, I am proud to say that I was elected to The Board. I am thrilled to find another way to serve this community that I love so much. Thank you, Phillip George! Thank you for supporting me and for supporting Wildflower! If you need a probate, estate planning, elder law attorney, Phil and his team are wonderful.
